Welcome Spring and St. Patrick's Day (18.03.17)

March 21, 2017

A keepsake /ˈkiːpˌseɪk/ - something that you keep to help you remember a person, place, or event, a memento or souvenir
To germinate /ˈdʒɜːmɪneɪt/ - when the seed of a plant starts to grow
To take root - to develop roots
A sprout/to sprout - a new part (such as a leaf or bud) that growns on a plant
A seedling - a young plant that is grown from seed
Pollen - yellow dust that is produced by a plant and that is carried to other plants of the same kind usually by wind or insects so that the plants can produce seeds
To pollinate - to put polle
n into a flower or plant so that it produces seeds
A flower (shamrock) lei /ˈleɪ/ - necklace usually of flowers or leaves
A garland /ˈɡɑːlənd/ - a ring or rope that is made of leaves, flowers, or some other material and that is used as a decoration
A four-leaf clover - a lucky clover (faith, love, luck, hope)
A three-leaf clover- shamrock (the Holy Trinity – the Father, the Sun and the Holy Spirit)
A flower wreath /riːθ/ - a flower crown
To wither /ˈwɪðə(r)/ – to fade and die

Saturday morning 18th of March met us overcast and rainy, but the cozy space Zelenka and the topic of our meeting helped us to forget about it and get a spring mood and of course useful knowledge in English.

This time the meeting was double. The first part was devoted to the first messengers of spring to flowers. Children learned about the structure of the flower, what it consists of, how it grows and could "assemble" its own flower from roots to petals. Also they saw a small scientific experience during which they found out how flowers can change their color.

The second part of the event was about St. Patrick's Day. Thanks to the interactive story the children learned about the traditions and main symbols of this holiday - green color, shamrock, leprechaun, rainbow and pot of gold. We managed to make for everyone their own personal happy rainbow and a shamrock lei. We fed the "hungry" leprechauns and found a rainbow and a pot of gold.

And here is also a small vocabulary with the words and expressions that we used at our meeting:

A keepsake /ˈkiːpˌseɪk/ - something that you keep to help you remember a person, place, or event, a memento or souvenir
To germinate /ˈdʒɜːmɪneɪt/ - when the seed of a plant starts to grow

A seedling - a young plant that is grown from seed
Pollen - yellow dust that is produced by a plant and that is carried to other plants of the same kind usually by wind or insects so that the plants can produce seeds
To pollinate - to put polle
n into a flower or plant so that it produces seeds
A flower (shamrock) lei /ˈleɪ/ - necklace usually of flowers or leaves
A garland /ˈɡɑːlənd/ - a ring or rope that is made of leaves, flowers, or some other material and that is used as a decoration

A three-leaf clover- shamrock (the Holy Trinity – the Father, the Sun and the Holy Spirit)
A flower wreath /riːθ/ - a flower crown
To wither /ˈwɪðə(r)/ – to fade and die

The meeting was held within Bilingual Families Challenge 2017- a series of educational activities for parents and children to help make English with a child at home pleasant and familiar daily activities and  to find like-minded people for you themselves and bilingual friends for your children.
